TIM JOHNSTON
Executive Coach & Consultant
UNITED KINGDOM | LONDON
Summary
Tim brings 25 years of Financial Services experience to a coaching practice characterised by deep reflection and a calm energy. This combination allows him to gain a perspective from which to ask challenging questions that bring clarity and a path towards action.
Coaching Style
Tim works with a range of clients including board level executives, Financial Services professionals and individuals in transition. He balances a direct, realistic and pragmatic approach with empathy and sensitivity.
Tim is an excellent thinking partner for a senior leader requiring a considered, objective viewpoint and a coaching environment in which reality-testing and supportive challenge will bring about productive shifts in perspective. Typical coaching themes include empowering others, resilience in high-pressure environments, role transitions, and improving the quality of relationships. Building on his training and experience as a mediator, he is particularly interested in working with conflict – managing it, resolving it, and preventing it.
Professional Experience
After graduating in Philosophy, Politics & Economics from Oxford University in 1993, Tim joined Goldman Sachs in London as an equity trader. From 2003-2010, he held roles on the buy-side at Modal Capital Partners, Citadel and the Wellcome Trust, before returning to the sell-side, running European Cash Equity Trading at J. P. Morgan from 2010-2018. He studied part-time for an Executive Master’s at INSEAD in 2015 in Coaching & Consulting for Change, the beginning of a transition which culminated in him leaving Finance at the beginning of 2020 to become a coach.
Qualifications
In 2015 Tim studied part-time at Insead University, completing an Executive Masters in Coaching & Consulting for Change in 2017. On leaving finance, he trained with Barefoot Coaching and is an ICF Associate Certified Coach (ACC). He also trained as a legal mediator with the London School of Mediation in 2020 and is part of their teaching faculty. This additional qualification allows him to bring a balanced approach to difficult or conflictual situations, in which reality-testing and supportive challenge can bring small but productive shifts in the client’s perspective.
Personal Interests
Tim is a follower of Peter Attia’s work on health-span and longevity. He enjoys hiking, swimming, rowing, training in the gym, walking and cycling. His hobbies include music, photography, and writing.
