James is an executive coach and strategic advisor with over 25 years of leadership experience in the global pharmaceutical industry, including more than two decades in Japan.

James takes a practical and people-centred approach to coaching, shaped by many years of hands-on leadership experience. He believes in asking the right questions, creating space for honest reflection, and supporting leaders to take clear, purposeful steps that deliver meaningful and measurable results. At the core of his philosophy is a strong belief that engaged workplaces – where people feel valued, equipped, and empowered – are fundamental to both long-term business success and positive social impact. Currently, James works with C-suite executives, business unit leaders, and high-potential talent navigating complex transitions, cross-cultural dynamics, and increasing leadership visibility. He is particularly passionate about enabling Japan and Asian-based talent to lead on the global stage. With his extensive experience as an expat in Japan, James enjoys working with new expat executives, challenging their assumptions, broadening their cultural lens, and helping them build trust and influence.

He previously held senior commercial and country leadership roles at several Fortune 100 pharmaceutical companies. Most notably, he served as Country President for AbbVie Japan, where he led the company through two five-year strategic cycles. During his tenure, AbbVie Japan nearly tripled in size, launched a completely new innovative portfolio, and became widely recognised as a top-tier employer. Under his leadership, the organisation achieved leading positions across all its therapeutic areas and was ranked as the highest-performing pharmaceutical company in Japan by Great Place to Work. James has experience in the Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Healthcare Services, Biotech Startups, and Recruitment sectors.

James is an ICF Associate Certified Coach (ACC). He is certified in Marshall Goldsmith Stakeholder Centred Coaching and Bailey Balfour (Level 1).

Outside of work, James is a music lover, eternally average golfer and devoted explorer of Japan’s rich culture and culinary traditions.
